The approach provides a common language to explore, discover and learn in a collaborative environment that supports and sustains the creativity and innovation of the educational community. Recently\u00a0Thinking Schools Ethiopia recently signed a Memo of Understanding to collaborate with the Addis Ababa Bureau of Education and the government (public) schools in Ethiopia\u2019s capital city. Concurrently UNESCO International Institute for Capacity Building in Africa has recently stated its&#8217; support in a document about Thinking Schools Ethiopia as a modern pedagogy. More will be shared on the support and collaboration with UNESCO-IICBA in an upcoming blog.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What are Thinking Schools?<\/strong><br \/>\nThinking Schools Ethiopia (TSE) is a school transformational model (child, educator, community) embodying 21<sup>st<\/sup>\u00a0century thinking skills to improve the capacity of:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>students in\u00a0pre-k, elementary, secondary and university as life long learners;<\/li>\n<li>educators to work collaboratively as a whole school community;<\/li>\n<li>Ethiopian master facilitators as model practitioners and trainers.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/blog.thinkingschoolsethiopia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/govt-school-students7.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" title=\"govt school students7\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/blog.thinkingschoolsethiopia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/govt-school-students7.jpg?resize=300%2C200\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/><\/a>The TSE approach includes the coordinated use of visual mapping, collaborative networking, reflective questioning, thinking skills, structuring environment, and developing dispositions to create, develop and sustain a research-based school transformational model.<\/p>\n<p>The Thinking Schools Ethiopia (TSE) approach focuses on improving the quality of teacher effectiveness, applying research-based methodologies that are aligned with how the brain thinks and learns, and a systems thinking approach with whole school implementation. Assessment of students, educators and the implementation of TSE are accomplished using qualitative and quantitative methods including use of thinking skills tools.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/blog.thinkingschoolsethiopia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/govt-school-students4.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" title=\"govt school students4\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/blog.thinkingschoolsethiopia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/govt-school-students4.jpg?resize=300%2C200\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/><\/a>How is it different from existing approaches?<br \/>\n<\/strong>The Thinking Schools Ethiopia (TSE) approach is a whole school systems approach that builds capacity from within developing a foundation that is reflective, sustainable, replicable and collaborative. TSE is part of a greater global collaboration that supports bidirectional development. Often these models differentiate between \u201clower\u201d and \u201chigher\u201d order skills.\u00a0 In general terms, there are fundamental cognitive processes for generating and organizing information, skills of analysis and synthesis, and processes of creativity and evaluation.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Visual Mapping \u00a0<\/strong>There are many different kinds of visual mapping techniques such as brainstorming webs, graphic organizers and conceptual and \u201csystems\u201d mapping.\u00a0 Usually visual mapping approaches mirror specific kinds of thinking skills or theories of learning. Some of these tools are used in isolated ways for certain tasks, some are open ended. Positioning of students on the floor, seating arrangements in the classroom, and the accessibility of learning materials are all dimensions of the environment. The guide which is translated into Amharic, is used as part of the initial school leadership team training for each school to better understand its needs and vision in participatory centered workshops. Each team participates in TSE learner centered workshops using thinking methodologies to develop a sustainable plan for implementing thinking methodologies at their schools.<\/p>\n<p>Phase 1 of the project between August 2009 &#8211; November 2011 involved over 2000 educators in Ethiopia participating in multiple day workshops.
