There are currently over 400 schools in the United Kingdom that are part of the Thinking Schools network. A major project is with the Malaysian Government where together the collaboration is aiming to have all Malaysian schools become thinking schools as part of a national innovation strategy.

Based in Addis Ababa, Eminence does not limit its engagements within Ethiopia alone, but envisions growing social entrepreneurship beyond its country of origin. Eminence is an investment set on establishing pathways for broader sustainable change. In so doing, Eminence takes investing a step further as opposed to conventional quick profit oriented specific market business. As a social entrepreneur, Eminence has been fostering social change in key identified areas by engaging in poverty alleviation and addressing social and environmental challenges. Eminence’s mission is simple. The company seeks to find applicable business methodologies, combines these with innovation to impact the wider community. In other words, Eminence finds gaps and attempts to fill in these gaps through creation and enhancement. Where gaps have been identified, if falling within the realm of the departments currently functional within Eminence, the company employs innovation to come up with new methods. On the other hand, for already existing methodologies/ modes of operation, Eminence intervenes to ensure better performance and utilization of capacities.

One.org – Ethiopia’s Progress in Education
One Living Proof is Living Proof is a showcase of stories that are too often ignored – the incredible progress being achieved by some of the world’s poorest people. The Key Messages in the article are:

1. Access to education in Ethiopia has improved significantly. Approximately 3 million pupils were in primary school in 1994/95. By 2008/09, primary enrolment had risen to 15.5 million – an increase of over 500%.

2. Progress has been enabled through a sustained government-led effort to reduce poverty and expand the public education system equitably. This has been backed by substantial increases in national education expenditure and aid to the sector, as well as improved planning and implementation capacity at all levels.

3. Increased regional and local autonomy and community participation have also had a key role in expanding access to education across the country.

UNESCO-IICBA – Strengthening Teacher Development in Africa
The UNESCO International Institute for Capacity Building in Africa (IICBA) was officially established by the UNESCO General Conference in October, 1999. Its establishment was part of UNESCO’s drive to decentralize its functions. In particular IICBA expressed UNESCO’s commitment to capacity building in Africa. IICBA is headquartered in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, and presently has two nodes, one situated within the UNESCO Regional Office in Dakar, and the second one within Pretoria University, South Africa. Through these three centres IICBA provides services to some 20 countries.

Thinking Schools Ethiopia is collaborating with The Southern Nations, Nationalities and People’s Region to implement the Thinking Schools approach across the Southern Nations region.

The Southern Nations, Nationalities and People’s Region (SNNPR) is located in the Southern and South-Western part of Ethiopia. Astronomically, it roughly lies between 4 o.43 – 8 o.58 North latitude and 34 o.88- 39 o.14 East longitude. It is bordered with Kenya in South, the Sudan in South West, Gambella region in North West and surrounded by Oromiya region in North West, North and East directions.

USAID to Launch Five-Year Ethiopian Education Endeavor

A preliminary five-year plan to improve Ethiopia’s educational system was released today by the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID). The draft Statement of Work (SOW) outlines what the agency expects to accomplish via the Reading for Ethiopia’s Achievement Developed (READ) project, which seeks to improve the reading and writing skills of elementary school students.

According to the draft SOW: The overall program will have four components: curriculum improvement, pedagogical techniques, appropriate technology and teaching aids, and co‐curricular activity and community outreach. In addition, an evaluation project is expected to conduct mid‐term and final evaluations of the complete READ program to determine the impact of the program intervention.
